Storing Cigars

Keeping your cigars in good condition for a long time

Most people won’t smoke an entire box of cigars in one sitting. So it’s important to prepare a place to store them for later. There are some inexpensive ways to store your cigars, but purchasing a humidor is the best way to protect your investment for the long term. Humidors will keep your cigars in perfect condition for whenever you bring them out to smoke them. The best ones can complement the décor in any room, as well.

There are a few rules to follow when storing your cigars in a humidor. You want to make sure your cigars are being kept at the right humidity and temperature. Follow the 70/70 rule: 70% humidity and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re using a humidor, make sure you prep it before hand for the humidity. Not preparing your humidor for the cigars before you put them in there may require you to adjust it, ruining the cigars already in there.

Although humidors provide the best conditions when storing for a longer period of time, they may be too expensive for a casual smoker. A Ziploc bag is a cheaper solution for storing a few cigars for a short period of time, usually a couple weeks. If they’re not going to be smoked within that period, you may notice that they begin to dry out and the flavors start to change. You can try putting a damp sponge or a product called wet foam. These will help the cigars stay at the correct humidity for a longer period of time. If you do this, however, make sure that the cigars are not coming into direct contact with the sponge or foam, because this will ruin the wrapper of the cigar.

Wherever you choose to store your cigars, make sure they are in an airtight container. The humidity and temperature of the air around your cigars will help them maintain their quality for a longer period of time. Though humidors are the best choice for managing the humidity and temperature, sometimes they may lose their air seal. Check your hygrometer, or tool that measures humidity percentage, often to make sure that the cigars are staying at the correct humidity.
